Modular Log Homes

Log cabins are become very popular as dream homes these days. The common perception about log cabins is that they are holiday retreats located in forest areas. But the truth is that majority of log homes are the main dwelling of the owners and more often than not are located around urban areas. With the growing popularity of log homes, the modular home market has capitalized on this demand to create log home modular homes. So, these days you can get modular log homes constructed according to your preferences.

Log modular homes are preferred because constructing them is cost-effective, and expedient. The term "Modular Homes" is not clear-cut and can mean any of these two things:

Creating and crafting a log home according to the available raw material and optimum uses.
Pre-fabricating a log home modular home using an assembly line approach.

Modular log homes are made of even, standardized mill logs which are easy to put together. Essentially, a mill log is one which has passed through a saw mill. Generally, the wood used in mill logs is pine, fir, cedar or spruce of which pine is the least expensive. However, the Western red cedar is considered to be the superior species to use in modular log cabins because of its durability and resistance to decay and corrosion. However, it is the most costly as compared to other wood species.

When a log home is built onsite, the work is delayed frequently because of climatic conditions. This problem is mitigated when creating a modular log home. Since modular log homes are constructed in an environment which is not susceptible to the elements, the work gets done faster. Modular homes are tough because they have been designed and built in a manner to withstand the trauma of transportation. So they tend to be more resilient than the log homes that are handcrafted on site.

The controlled environment in which modular log homes are constructed leaves no room for material wastage. And for the potential buyer this means a huge saving in terms of material costs.

Method of Constructing a Log Modular Home
Generally the modular sizes commonly used are 4", 8", 12", 16" and 48". Once the construction is completed, the modules are transported to the site where they are mounted onto the foundation. Cranes are used to haul up the modules and affix them to the foundation. Fasteners are used to bind the modules together to create an air-tight modular log home. The entire process takes around 2-3 days. The modules are fitted with all the electrical fittings, wiring and plumbing that is needed to finish the home.

You can choose your own floor designs and plans according to your preferences. A modular home provides for ease in designing because designs can be created and modified on computers. You have to bear in mind though that modular log homes have to adhere to specifications and standards laid down by State Laws.

A large number of people are opting for modular log homes because they are sturdy and low in cost. Besides, it gives you the look of a traditional log cabin with none of the hitches like loosely constructed panels and lack of resistance to cold drafts.

If you're planning to get a log cabin, a modular log home may be just the thing you're looking for. It will be designed and completed in a couple of weeks and can be set up in any location you choose with little effort and sweat.
